Bogdan Gîrbovan, born in 1981, lives and works in Bucharest, Romania. He is currently doing his MA in Photography and Video at the Academy of Fine Arts Bucharest. Gîrbovan works mainly with serial photography that he uses to investigate social relations and hierarchy.

----------------------------
Changes induced in the landscape through human intervention were heavily documented using serial photography. Industrial architectures and urban structures were the favorite subjects of this method of documenting reality in an objective manner.

However, for Bogdan Girbovan people are more interesting than buildings. Hierarchies and social relationships constitute his area of research, even when the latter imply a certain amount of alienation.

In Romania, the photographic archives of factories and state institutions were not preserved after the Revolution of 1989. Enthusiastic crowds destroyed most of the photos. There is an acute lack of visual material, and as a result the experiences of several generations are poorly documented.

This is why a series of photographs like 10/1 can be so filled with information. Even if a local eye knows most of it, it all seems new. The standardized living space inside the block of flats, with its history that is so strongly connected to Communism and the variety of the ambient, objects and people who nowadays live in these one-room apartments – they all create a panoramic human landscape.

Within its confines, the objects become signs that describe their owners in an almost heraldic manner. It is easy to read at the same time clues about the age, the inclinations, the preferences and the personal history of the inhabitant – visible and intelligible proof standing for the complexities of an entire individual life.

This kind of systematic visual inventory can also be applied to the portrait, as it happens in the 5@14 series. Five boys get their picture taken. Together, they become the collective portrait of this small-scale social unit, which is the local neighborhood gang.
