Anca Benera (b. 1977, Constantia, Romania) lives in Bucharest. She graduated from the National University of Art Bucharest. Most of her works focus on the interrelation between painting, photography and the memory’s structure. Benera also works with video and mixed-media installations. Anca Benera is co-founder of Center for Visual Introspection Bucharest. Among her on-going projects we mention Matter & History (2010-) and Bucharest-Munich:Re-reading the city (2008-).

Matter&History is a journey through the afterlife of Bucharest public monuments of the interwar and socialist times, through identity politics and reformation of public space. The project examines the symbolic dimension of destruction of public monuments, focusing on their ongoing embodiment of power and memory.
Anca Benera takes photographs of the original locations of a series of 13 disappeared monuments which emphasize the official(ised) construction of history and mirror the political circumstances that provoked their relocation, destruction or transformation. Presented in a gallery as impartial documents, the images are accompanied by soundtracks listed via headphones. The audio-guide dscribes the ghost-like appearance of the former statues as they are still existing on their sites.
Alternatively, she leads the visitor through the city, performing the role of a guide who explains the image of an urban landscape that doesn’t exist (anymore) on site.

Bucharest-Munich:Re-reading the city

"Leftovers" produced by public space are appropriated and transformed into fictious representations of the artworld's established codes.

'Bucharest-Munich:Re-reading the city'' is a research project taking place within the context of Public Affairs-Irregular art practices in the city'' at Platform3 Munich.

Warsaw Wildlife:Notes

As evidenced by recent studies, a huge number of birds and  mammals are colonizing cities; they feel more at home in cityscapes than in their natural habitats. These animals, some of whom we encounter daily crossing the street or walking past us, other whose existence we had no idea of, result in a city leading a double life many of us are unaware of.
